Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Haikou — Volcano & Qilou
Arrive at Haikou Airport. Morning: Explore the Haikou Volcanic Cluster Geopark — climb Ma'anling Crater and walk through ancient lava tunnels. Afternoon: Visit Qilou Old Street for colonial-era architecture and local snacks. Evening: Authentic Hainanese dinner of Wenchang chicken and Dongshan lamb. Overnight in Haikou.
Day 2: Haikou to Boao (100km)
Morning: Drive east along the coast. Stop at Dongzhai Harbor Mangrove Reserve — boardwalk through China's largest mangrove forest. Continue to Boao, the 'Davos of Asia'. Visit the Boao Forum for Asia permanent site and Jade Belt Beach — where the Wanquan River meets the South China Sea. Afternoon: Explore Boao's laid-back seaside town. Overnight in Boao.
Day 3: Boao to Wanning (80km)
Morning: Drive south to Wanning, Hainan's emerging surf destination. Visit Xinglong Tropical Botanical Garden — 1,200+ species of tropical plants. Afternoon: Explore Riyue Bay and Shimei Bay — China's best surf beaches with world-class waves. Optional: take a surf lesson. Watch sunset from the beach. Overnight in Wanning.
Day 4: Wanning to Sanya (120km)
Morning: Visit Nanwan Monkey Island — take a scenic cable car over the sea to an island inhabited by 2,500 macaques. Watch monkeys in their natural habitat (hold onto your belongings!). Continue south through coconut plantation country. Afternoon: Arrive in Sanya. Check into beach resort. Evening at leisure — swim, beach walk, sunset cocktails. Overnight in Sanya.
Day 5: Sanya Grand Finale & Departure
Morning: Visit Nanshan Buddhist Cultural Park — the magnificent 108m Guanyin statue rising from the sea is a fitting finale for your island journey. Afternoon: Free time at Yalong Bay — China's most beautiful beach. Transfer to Sanya Airport for departure, or extend your stay for more beach time!
