Tour Overview
Travel back in time with this intimate 2-day exploration of Pingyao Ancient City, a UNESCO World Heritage site and China's best-preserved ancient walled city. Unlike other 'old towns' in China, Pingyao remains lived-in — its 4,000+ Ming and Qing courtyard houses are still home to residents going about daily life much as they have for centuries. Walk the complete 6-km city wall, visit Rishengchang — the first draft bank in Chinese history that effectively ran China's financial system in the 19th century, and tour the sprawling Wang Family Grand Courtyard, often called China's 'Forbidden City of the common people.'

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Pingyao Ancient City
Morning arrival in Pingyao (by high-speed train from Taiyuan, Xi'an, or Beijing). Begin with a walk on Pingyao's magnificent city wall — built in 1370, its 6 km circuit offers panoramic views over the ancient gray-tiled rooftops and narrow lanes. Visit Rishengchang Draft Bank, where Chinese merchants created the world's first bank draft system, and explore the County Government Office (Yamen), a complete Qing dynasty administrative complex. Wander Ming-Qing Street (Nan Dajie), once the financial heart of China, now lined with traditional lacquerware shops, vinegar breweries, and noodle houses. Evening: enjoy Pingyao's specialty — knife-cut noodles (dao xiao mian) with aged Shanxi vinegar. Overnight in a traditional courtyard hotel inside the ancient city.
Day 2: Wang Family Compound & Shuanglin Temple
Morning drive to the Wang Family Grand Courtyard (Wangjia Dayuan, 1 hour), the largest and most impressive of Shanxi's merchant family compounds. Spread over 150,000 square meters, this 'Forbidden City of the common people' took three centuries to build. Explore its labyrinth of courtyards, ancestral halls, private gardens, and stone carvings — each brick and beam tells a story of this merchant dynasty's rise and fall. Afternoon: visit Shuanglin Temple, hidden in a quiet village 6 km from Pingyao. Inside its modest halls are over 2,000 painted clay sculptures dating from the Song to Qing dynasties, including the breathtaking 'Thousand-Armed Guanyin' — considered some of the finest surviving examples of Chinese Buddhist sculpture. Transfer to Pingyao Ancient City Railway Station. End of tour.
