Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrive in Pingyao (high-speed train from Taiyuan ~30min, Xi'an ~3h). Afternoon: walk the Ming Dynasty city wall — at 6.4km, it's one of China's best-preserved. Visit Rishengchang Draft Bank — the "Father of Chinese Banking" founded in 1823, which once controlled half of China's silver trade. Explore the Ming-Qing Street, the county government office (a complete magistrate's compound), and the armed escort agency museum (the private security firms that protected Pingyao's silver shipments). Evening: lantern-lit streets — try Pingyao's famous beef and aged Shanxi vinegar. Overnight in Pingyao.
Morning: drive to the Wang Family Compound (about 1 hour) — absolutely enormous: 123 courtyards, 1,118 rooms, built over 300 years by one merchant family. It's often called the "Forbidden City of Folk Residences." Spend 2-3 hours exploring. Afternoon: Zhangbi Ancient Castle — a unique village built atop a vast underground tunnel network dating to the Sui Dynasty (581-618 AD). Walk the subterranean passages, see the watchtowers and defensive positions. Return to Pingyao. Overnight in Pingyao.
Early morning drive to Hukou Waterfall (about 3 hours). The Yellow River, China's "Mother River," suddenly squeezes from 300m wide to a 50m-wide gorge and drops 20 meters — the result is a thundering wall of yellow-brown water, spray reaching hundreds of meters high, and rainbows forming in the mist. The Chinese name "Hukou" means "Kettle Mouth" — an apt description of the churning water. Visit both the Shanxi-side (closer to the action) and Shaanxi-side (panoramic) viewpoints. After the waterfall, transfer to Xi'an (about 3h) or back to Taiyuan (about 4h) for departure.
