Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Datong — Yungang Grottoes
Arrive at Datong. Morning: Yungang Grottoes — 252 caves, 51,000 Buddhas, the pinnacle of Chinese Buddhist cave art. Afternoon: Huayan Monastery — Liao Dynasty (1038 AD) temples with exquisite wooden pagodas. Evening: Datong ancient city wall. Overnight in Datong.
Day 2: Hanging Temple & Drive to Pingyao
Morning: the Hanging Temple (1.5h from Datong) — walk the narrow cliffside corridors 75m above the ground. Afternoon: drive to Pingyao (4h). Arrive by sunset. Evening stroll through the lantern-lit Ming-Qing Street. Overnight in Pingyao.
Day 3: Pingyao Ancient City
Full day: climb the 6.4km city wall, visit Rishengchang (China's first bank), and explore the Ming-Qing Street. Afternoon: Wang Family Compound — 123 courtyards of a Qing Dynasty banking dynasty. Visit Shuanglin Temple — 2,000+ exquisite Ming Dynasty clay sculptures. Overnight in Pingyao.
Day 4: Shuanglin or Jinci & Departure
Morning: free time in Pingyao — revisit the city wall, shop for Pingyao lacquerware, or take a rickshaw ride. Drive to Taiyuan (1.5h). Visit Jinci Temple if time permits. Afternoon: transfer to Taiyuan Airport.
