Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Datong
Arrive at Datong. Afternoon: visit the Nine-Dragon Screen — China's largest glazed-tile dragon wall (600 years old). Explore Datong's ancient city wall at sunset. Evening: sample Shanxi knife-cut noodles. Overnight in Datong.
Day 2: Yungang Grottoes & Hanging Temple
Morning: Yungang Grottoes — a UNESCO site with 252 caves and 51,000 Buddha statues carved between 460-525 AD. Stand before the 17m seated Buddha in Cave 20. Afternoon: drive to the Hanging Temple (1.5h) — a 1,500-year-old monastery clinging to a sheer cliff 75m above the ground, combining Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism in one structure. Overnight at Mount Wutai foothills.
Day 3: Mount Wutai Sacred Mountain
Full day exploring Mount Wutai — one of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains. Visit Tayuan Temple (the iconic white stupa), Xiantong Temple (the oldest, built 68 AD), and Dailuoding Temple with 1,080 steps. Walk the Wuye Temple pilgrims' circuit. See the bronze hall at Pusading Temple. Overnight at Mount Wutai.
Day 4: Mount Wutai to Pingyao
Morning: visit Shuxiang Temple — famous for its 500 Arhat statues. Afternoon: drive to Pingyao (4h). Arrive at Pingyao Ancient City. Walk the Ming-Qing Street as red lanterns light up at dusk. Overnight in Pingyao.
Day 5: Pingyao Ancient City Full Day
Morning: climb Pingyao City Wall — one of China's best-preserved ancient city walls (6.4km, built 1370). Visit Rishengchang — China's first draft bank (1823). Afternoon: Wang Family Compound — a staggering 300-year-old merchant mansion spanning 123 courtyards. Visit Shuanglin Temple with its 2,000+ painted clay sculptures. Evening: 'Encore Pingyao' immersive show (optional). Overnight in Pingyao.
Day 6: Taiyuan & Departure
Morning: drive to Taiyuan (1.5h). Visit Jinci Temple — a 1,400-year-old garden complex with the iconic 'immortal maid' Song Dynasty sculptures. Afternoon: transfer to Taiyuan Airport for departure.
