D1Lhasa Arrival & Acclimatization▾
Arrive in Lhasa (3,650m). Airport pickup with oxygen supply. Transfer to hotel and rest β crucial for altitude acclimatization. Light evening stroll along Barkhor Street, the 1,300-year-old pilgrimage circuit around Jokhang Temple. Prostrating pilgrims, butter lamps, and the smell of juniper incense.
D2Potala Palace & Jokhang Temple▾
Morning: Potala Palace β the iconic 13-story winter palace of the Dalai Lamas with 1,000 rooms. White Palace (administrative) and Red Palace (religious) contain chapels, tombs, and priceless murals. Allow 2-3 hours at altitude. Afternoon: Jokhang Temple β Tibet's most sacred, housing the life-sized golden Buddha of Jowo Shakyamuni. Rooftop views over Barkhor Square.
D3Sera Monastery & Drepung Monastery▾
Morning: Drepung Monastery β once the world's largest monastery with 10,000 monks. Climb through whitewashed alleys to the main assembly hall. Afternoon: Sera Monastery for the famous 3 PM monk debates β animated clapping, gesturing, and centuries-old Buddhist philosophical traditions in the courtyard. Visit a traditional Tibetan medicine factory.
D4Yamdrok Lake Day Trip▾
Full day trip to Yamdrok Yumtso β one of Tibet's three sacred turquoise lakes at 4,400m. Cross Kamba La Pass (4,794m) for the first breathtaking panorama. Walk the lakeshore with views of Mt. Nojin Kangtsang (7,191m) across the water. Picnic lunch with yak butter tea. Return to Lhasa.
D5Gyantse & Shigatse▾
Drive across the Tibetan Plateau via the Friendship Highway. Cross Karo La Pass (5,045m) with views of glaciers. Visit Gyantse β the Pelkor Chode Monastery and Kumbum Stupa with 108 chapels. Continue to Shigatse, Tibet's second city. Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama.
