Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Zhangye Danxia

Arrive in Zhangye. Afternoon: Visit Zhangye Danxia National Geopark — board the shuttle bus to tour all four viewing platforms. The landscape looks like a painter's palette: layered bands of red, orange, yellow, green, and purple sandstone stretching to the horizon. Stay for sunset when the low-angle light makes the colors seem to glow from within. Overnight in Zhangye.

Day 2: Jiayuguan Fortress & Overhanging Wall

Morning high-speed train from Zhangye to Jiayuguan (about 1.5 hours). First stop: Jiayuguan Pass — a colossal Ming Dynasty fortress at the western terminus of the Great Wall. Walk the imposing ramparts with views of the Qilian Mountains and the Gobi Desert stretching in both directions. Climb the gate tower for the classic photo. Afternoon: Visit the Overhanging Great Wall (Xuanguan Changcheng), where the wall dramatically climbs a steep 150-meter ridge. Then explore the Wei-Jin Tombs — underground chambers with vivid 1,700-year-old brick murals depicting daily Silk Road life. Overnight in Jiayuguan.

Day 3: Jiayuguan Museum & Departure

Morning: Visit the excellent Jiayuguan Great Wall Museum to deepen your understanding of the Silk Road's military and trade history. If time permits, visit the First Strategic Post — a beacon tower marking the actual westernmost point of the Great Wall. Afternoon: Transfer to Jiayuguan airport or train station for departure.

Travel Tip: The Danxia colors are most vivid at sunset (around 7-8pm in summer, 5-6pm in winter). Jiayuguan can be very windy — bring a windbreaker even in summer.
