Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Zhangye β€” Danxia Sunset

Arrive in Zhangye. Afternoon visit to Zhangye Danxia National Geopark β€” the world-famous 'rainbow mountains' with their surreal layers of crimson, gold, and emerald. Take the park shuttle to each viewing platform and stay for sunset when the mountains seem to catch fire with color. Overnight in Zhangye.

Day 2: Zhangye β†’ Jiayuguan β€” Fortress & Great Wall

Morning high-speed train to Jiayuguan (1.5h). Full day exploring: Jiayuguan Pass β€” the massive Ming Dynasty fortress at the Great Wall's western end. Walk the ramparts, climb the gate tower for desert-mountain panoramas. Afternoon: Overhanging Great Wall climbing a steep 150m ridge, and the Wei-Jin Tombs with vivid 1,700-year-old Silk Road murals. Overnight in Jiayuguan.

Day 3: Jiayuguan β†’ Dunhuang β€” Mogao Caves & Desert Sunset

Morning high-speed train to Dunhuang (2.5h). Afternoon: Visit the legendary Mogao Caves β€” a UNESCO World Heritage site with 492 preserved cave temples containing 45,000 square meters of Buddhist murals painted over 1,000 years. Your guided tour covers 8 representative caves (including the famous 35.5m Buddha statue in Cave 96). Late afternoon: Head to Mingsha Sand Dunes. Climb the dunes or ride a camel, then watch sunset over Crescent Moon Spring β€” a perfectly-formed oasis that has never dried up in 2,000 years. Overnight in Dunhuang.

Day 4: Dunhuang Museum & Departure

Morning: Visit Dunhuang Museum to see Silk Road artifacts, including original Buddhist sutras. If your departure is in the afternoon, visit the White Horse Pagoda or the Dunhuang night market for local dried fruits and Silk Road souvenirs. Transfer to Dunhuang airport or train station for departure.

Travel Tip: Mogao Caves tickets must be booked in advance (especially during July-October peak season). Photography is strictly prohibited inside the caves. For the best dune photos at Mingsha, climb the far-right ridge β€” fewer crowds, better angles.
