Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Zhangye
Arrive at Zhangye. Afternoon: Dafo Temple — the 34.5m reclining Buddha. Evening: explore Zhangye's food streets. Overnight in Zhangye.
Day 2: Zhangye Danxia Rainbow Mountains
Full day at Zhangye Danxia Geopark. Morning at the rainbow mountains. Afternoon at Ice Valley Danxia. Sunset at the best viewing platform. Overnight in Zhangye.
Day 3: Matisi Temple & Train to Dunhuang
Morning: Matisi Temple — climb the cliff walkways to the Buddhist grottoes. Afternoon: board the high-speed train to Dunhuang (3.5h) through the Hexi Corridor. Evening arrival. Explore Dunhuang Night Market — try donkey meat noodles and apricot tea. Overnight in Dunhuang.
Day 4: Mogao Caves & Mingsha Dunes
Morning: Mogao Caves — a UNESCO masterpiece. Visit 8 caves (standard ticket) including the 35m Maitreya Buddha in Cave 96 and the famous 'Flying Apsaras' mural. Visit the Digital Exhibition Center first for context. Afternoon: Mingsha Sand Dunes & Crescent Moon Spring. Ride a camel across the dunes (40 min), then climb to the ridge for panoramic sunset views over the golden desert. Overnight in Dunhuang.
Day 5: Dunhuang Museum & Departure
Morning: Dunhuang Museum — Silk Road artifacts and Mogao replicas. Visit the White Horse Pagoda and the Dunhuang Ancient City film set. Afternoon: transfer to Dunhuang Airport for departure.
