Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Zhangye
Arrive at Zhangye. Afternoon: Dafo Temple. Evening: food street exploration. Overnight in Zhangye.
Day 2: Zhangye Danxia Full Day
Full day at Zhangye Danxia Geopark — rainbow mountains and Ice Valley Danxia. Sunset at the best viewing platform. Overnight in Zhangye.
Day 3: Matisi Temple & Train to Jiayuguan
Morning: Matisi Temple cliff grottoes. Afternoon: high-speed train to Jiayuguan (1.5h). Arrive and visit the Jiayuguan Great Wall Museum. Evening: Jiayuguan food street. Overnight in Jiayuguan.
Day 4: Jiayuguan Fortress & Overhanging Great Wall
Morning: Jiayuguan Fortress — the 'First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven,' the western terminus of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. Walk the massive ramparts and towers. Afternoon: Overhanging Great Wall — a section of the wall that clings dramatically to a cliff face. Climb the steep steps for panoramic views of the Gobi Desert and Qilian Mountains. Overnight in Jiayuguan.
Day 5: Train to Dunhuang — Mogao Caves
Morning: high-speed train to Dunhuang (2.5h). Afternoon: Mogao Caves — the crown jewel of Silk Road Buddhist art. Visit 8 caves including the giant Maitreya Buddha and the 'Flying Apsaras' murals. The Digital Exhibition Center provides fascinating context. Evening: Dunhuang Night Market. Overnight in Dunhuang.
Day 6: Mingsha Dunes & Departure
Morning: Mingsha Sand Dunes — camel ride across the golden dunes to Crescent Moon Spring, an oasis that has existed for 2,000 years. Climb to the dune ridge for the panorama. Afternoon: transfer to Dunhuang Airport for departure.
