Tour Overview
Go deeper into Pingyao with this 3-day exploration that goes beyond the usual old city circuit. In addition to Pingyao's UNESCO-listed ancient city — the best-preserved walled city in China — this tour takes you into two extraordinary off-the-beaten-path sites: Zhangbi Ancient Fortress, a remarkably intact 1,400-year-old military fortress built into loess cliffs with 10 km of underground tunnels that once housed 10,000 soldiers, and Mianshan Mountain, one of China's most spectacular temple mountains where entire monastery complexes are cantilevered off sheer cliffs hundreds of meters above the valley.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Zhangbi Ancient Fortress
Morning arrival in Pingyao. After check-in, drive to Zhangbi Ancient Fortress (40 min). This astonishing site, dating to the Northern Dynasties (386-581 CE), is a complete underground military city carved into loess cliffs. Descend into a 10-km tunnel network on three levels — barracks, command posts, escape routes, and traps — all hidden beneath an ordinary-looking village. The intersecting tunnels are only wide enough for one person, with surprise chambers and defensive mechanisms. Above ground, explore the village's intact Ming-Qing architecture, its rare glazed-tile temple roofs, and the Kehan Temple — the only surviving temple in China dedicated to a Turkic khagan. Learn about the fascinating 'Liu-Wu-Xing' Daoist syncretism unique to this village. Return to Pingyao. Evening: watch the sunset from Pingyao's city wall with a panoramic view of the ancient city. Overnight in a Pingyao courtyard hotel.
Day 2: Pingyao Ancient City In-Depth
Full day inside Pingyao Ancient City. Begin on the city wall — built in 1370 under the Hongwu Emperor, its 6 km circumference is punctuated by 72 watchtowers (representing Confucius' 72 disciples) and 3,000 battlements. Visit Rishengchang Draft Bank, the 'Father of Chinese Banking' — this single courtyard controlled China's entire financial system for over a century. Explore the County Government Office (Yamen), a complete Qing dynasty administrative complex with courtrooms, prison cells, and the magistrate's residence. Wander the Temple of the City God and the Confucian Temple (Wenmiao), one of China's oldest (1163 CE). Afternoon: explore Ming-Qing Street's artisan workshops — watch lacquerware painters, paper-cut artists, and traditional shoemakers at work. Visit a 400-year-old vinegar workshop to sample aged Shanxi mature vinegar. Overnight in Pingyao.
Day 3: Mianshan Mountain & Departure
Morning drive to Mianshan Mountain (1 hour), one of China's most dramatic sacred mountains. Take the cable car to the mid-mountain temple belt. Visit Daluo Palace — a 13-story temple complex built directly into a cliff face, with halls connected by vertiginous staircases carved into the rock. The entire complex is 'China's largest Taoist architectural complex on a cliff.' Explore Yunfeng Temple, built inside a natural cave high on the precipice, and view the famous Baofu Rock — a massive boulder precariously balanced between two cliffs. Visit the Tomb of Jie Zitui, the hermit whose sacrifice is commemorated by the Cold Food Festival (Hanshi Jie). The mountain's waterfalls and pine forests provide a refreshing contrast to Pingyao's arid landscapes. Afternoon: transfer to Pingyao Ancient City Railway Station. End of tour.
