Marvel at the Yungang Grottoes' 51,000 Buddha statues, gasp at the Hanging Temple clinging to a sheer cliff, then ascend Wutai Mountain — China's holiest Buddhist peak with over 50 temples scattered across five flat summits. Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrive in Datong (high-speed train from Beijing ~2h). Afternoon at Yungang Grottoes — dedicate at least 3 hours to walking the 1km cliff and climbing into the caves. The five colossal Buddhas (Caves 16-20) are the star attraction, but the smaller caves with their intricate carvings of celestial musicians, flying apsaras, and narrative scenes are equally rewarding. Evening: Datong's old city walls lit up at night. Overnight in Datong.
Morning drive to the Hanging Temple — the 1,500-year-old temple literally bolted into a cliff face 75m above the valley. Walk its narrow wooden corridors — the views straight down are vertigo-inducing. The temple uniquely houses Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian shrines side by side. Afternoon: Yingxian Wooden Pagoda — the world's oldest and tallest surviving all-wooden structure (1056 AD, 67m). Built without a single nail or metal connector, it has survived earthquakes, wars, and 960 years of weather. Overnight in Datong.
Morning drive to Wutai Mountain (about 3 hours). Afternoon: begin exploring the temple valley. Visit Tayuan Temple — Wutai's landmark white dagoba visible for miles. Then Xiantong Temple, the oldest and largest on Wutai, founded 68 AD. End the day at Pusa Ding — climb the 108 steps (representing 108 earthly desires in Buddhism) to this Tibetan Buddhist temple on the summit with panoramic views. At each monastery, watch Tibetan pilgrims prostrating, monks chanting, and butter lamps flickering. Overnight on Wutaishan.
Morning: visit Shuxiang Temple (500 painted arhats), Dailuo Ding (optional 1,080-step climb), and the remote Nanshan Temple with its exquisite stone carvings. If the weather is clear, drive up to one of the five peaks for Himalayan-scale panoramas. Afternoon: descend the mountain and transfer to Taiyuan Wusu Airport or Taiyuan South Station for departure.
