Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Zhangye — Danxia Sunset
Arrive in Zhangye by flight or high-speed train. Meet your guide and transfer to hotel. Afternoon: Head to Zhangye Danxia National Geopark — China's most famous 'rainbow mountains.' Take the park shuttle bus to all four viewing platforms. Stay until sunset when the low-angle light transforms the already-colorful layered sandstone into an otherworldly palette of crimson, orange, gold, and green. Overnight in Zhangye.
Day 2: Danxia Sunrise — Matisi Grottoes
Optional early return to Danxia for sunrise photography (the morning light from the eastern platforms is spectacular). Return to hotel for breakfast. Late morning: Visit Matisi Grottoes (Horse's Hoof Temple), a complex of Buddhist cave temples carved into cliff faces 60km south of Zhangye. Explore the 1,600-year-old grottoes, including the massive 21-meter-tall standing Buddha inside the main cave. Afternoon: Giant Buddha Temple in downtown Zhangye — home to Asia's largest indoor reclining Buddha (34.5m). Overnight in Zhangye.
Day 3: Badain Jaran Desert
Morning drive to Badain Jaran Desert (about 2.5 hours, 160km). Enter the desert — home to the world's tallest stationary sand dunes reaching 500 meters. Visit Badain Jaran Lake, one of over 100 mysterious lakes hidden among the dunes. Climb a dune for panoramic desert views, photograph the surreal contrast of blue lakes nestled among golden sand. Optional: Sand surfing or short camel ride. Late afternoon return to Zhangye. Overnight in Zhangye.
Day 4: Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon
Drive to Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon (about 1 hour), one of Gansu's best-kept secrets. This dramatic canyon features red sandstone formations eroded into bizarre shapes over millions of years. Walk the canyon floor trail between towering walls, similar to Antelope Canyon in the US but on a grander scale. The interplay of light and shadow on the red rock walls creates stunning photo opportunities throughout the day. Afternoon: Return to Zhangye. Overnight in Zhangye.
Day 5: Zhangye Departure
Morning: Visit Binggou Danxia, a lesser-visited but equally spectacular section of the Danxia landform featuring castle-like rock formations and different color patterns from the main park. After brunch, transfer to Zhangye airport or train station for departure.
