Yunnan Travel Guide: Kunming, Dali, Lijiang & Shangri-La
Yunnan: China's Most Diverse Province
From tropical Xishuangbanna (bordering Laos) to Tibetan Shangri-La at 3,200m, Yunnan packs five climate zones into one province. Here's the classic 6-8 day route.
Kunming — The Spring City (1-2 Days)
Known as the "City of Eternal Spring" for its year-round 15-25°C weather. Must-see: Stone Forest — a surreal UNESCO geopark of limestone pinnacles formed 270 million years ago. Walk through "Ashima" rock and "Sword Peak Pond." Green Lake Park — Kunming's living room where locals sing opera, play chess, and feed black-headed gulls (November-March). Food: Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles — Yunnan's most famous dish where you cook ingredients tableside in a bowl of scalding chicken broth.
Dali — Between Mountain and Lake (2 Days)
2 hours by bullet train from Kunming. Dali Ancient Town sits dramatically between the 4,122m Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake. Must-do: Cycle Erhai Lake's western shore through Bai minority fishing villages. Visit Xizhou town for traditional Bai architecture and tie-dye workshops. The Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple have stood for 1,200 years.
Lijiang — UNESCO Maze (2 Days)
2 hours from Dali. Lijiang Old Town is an 800-year-old UNESCO World Heritage labyrinth of cobblestone alleys, stone bridges, and willow-lined canals with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (5,596m) as backdrop. Must-do: Climb Lion Hill for the postcard panorama. Visit Mu Palace — the "Forbidden City of the South." Evening: Naxi ancient music performance by septuagenarian musicians.
Tiger Leaping Gorge — One of the World's Great Hikes (1-2 Days)
2 hours from Lijiang. The 15km high trail offers jaw-dropping views of the Jinsha River crashing 3,900m below between Jade Dragon and Haba Snow Mountains. The full 2-day trek is world-class but the half-day hike to Tiger Leaping Rock is manageable for most fitness levels.
Shangri-La — Lost Horizon (1-2 Days)
4 hours from Lijiang (3,200m). Visit Songzanlin Monastery — the "Little Potala Palace" with 700 monks. Spin the world's largest prayer wheel (21m, 60 tons) at Dukezong Ancient Town. Pudacuo National Park — China's first national park with emerald lakes and alpine meadows.
