Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Day 1: Enter via the main gate. Ride the Bailong Elevator — the world's tallest outdoor lift (326m) shooting up through a cliff face. Emerge into Yuanjiajie for the Avatar Hallelujah Mountains and the Mountain-Claiming Platform. Afternoon: Tianzi Mountain for the classic sea-of-pillars panorama. Day 2: Golden Whip Stream — a 7.5km flat walk along a crystal-clear stream at the canyon floor, looking up at the pillars. No climbing required.

Tianmen Mountain — Heaven's Gate

The world's longest cable car (7.5km, 30 minutes) takes you from Zhangjiajie city center to the summit. Walk the 60m glass skywalk clinging to a vertical cliff at 1,430m. Climb the 999 steps of Heaven's Gate — a natural rock arch that airplanes have flown through. Allow a full day.

Grand Canyon Glass Bridge

The world's highest glass-bottomed bridge spans 430m across a canyon 300m below. Walking across it is genuinely terrifying and genuinely magnificent. The optional 260m bungee jump off the bridge is the world's highest.

Practical Tips

Best time: April-November. Summer brings dramatic mist. Autumn has the clearest skies. Tickets: Book online in advance (limited daily capacity). Stay: Wulingyuan town near the park entrance. Food: Tujia ethnic cuisine — smoked bacon, sour fish soup, and fern root noodles.
