Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Xi'an
Terracotta Warriors. City Wall bike ride. Muslim Quarter. Overnight train or fly to Lanzhou.
Day 2: Lanzhou
Yellow River Zhongshan Bridge. White Pagoda Mountain. Bingling Temple boat excursion — Buddhist carvings in a reservoir canyon.
Day 3: Xiahe
Drive to Xiahe. Labrang Monastery — one of Tibet's six great Gelugpa monasteries. Join pilgrims on the 3 km kora circuit. Tibetan monastery guesthouse.
Day 4: Zhangye
Drive across the Hexi Corridor. Afternoon: Zhangye Danxia Rainbow Mountains — painted stripes of red, orange, and yellow at sunset.
Day 5: Jiayuguan
Jiayuguan Fort — the western end of the Ming Great Wall, standing alone in the Gobi Desert. Overhanging Great Wall hike.
Day 6: Dunhuang
Drive to Dunhuang. Afternoon: Singing Sand Dunes & Crescent Moon Spring — camel ride at sunset.
Day 7: Mogao Caves
Morning: Mogao Caves — 1,000 years of Buddhist art in 492 cave temples (guided tour visits 8 caves). Afternoon: Dunhuang museum. Evening: Dunhuang night market.
Day 8: Turpan
High-speed train to Turpan. Flaming Mountains. Grape Valley. Jiaohe Ancient City. Uyghur dinner with lamb kebabs.
Day 9: Urumqi
Drive to Urumqi. Heavenly Lake in the Tian Shan mountains. Xinjiang museum. Farewell Central Asian feast.
Day 10: Departure
Urumqi airport transfer.
